As end of semester approaches, many undergraduate students are either looking for internships or already have one by now.
Unfortunately, the major purpose of students for doing
internships is that it strengthens the CV. Obviously it does. But internships
are meant for something much more rather than just looking good on CV. To keep it
short, internships are more about developing skills and growing your network.
Or you might even find your future employer.
A lot of students would rather go for ‘big names’, where
they learn almost nothing. Lucky enough they would give you the tour of the facility
and tell you about how the certain machine works. And even when the work is given
it’s more about updating database! Why do you need an engineering student for
updating the database?
Moreover, it’s becoming quite common for students to come
and brag about how they only went for 2 days in a week and yet got the
appreciation letter for completing the whole internship.
Honestly speaking those ‘big names’ on CV with no skills won’t
do you any good. There is no point doing an internship if you aren’t learning
something new. Relevant experience and skills will help you grow your career. Google
around there are a lot new startups popping up, not many people would have
heard of them but the learning experience at such places are great. You
actually get hands-on experience and build things. And if you can’t find a good
enough internship, do a course instead, work on your technical skills or build projects!
Just do something fun and learn something new!
