Electronics Engineering ? No Electrical Engineering !
Identity Struggle
If you clicked on the link to find out which one is 'better' you are going to be disappointed. For those who do not know me, I am currently pursuing B.E in Electrical Engineering from NED University and I am not here to tell you which one is better.
Last month, I was attending a technical seminar of IEEE. Where I met a very senior engineer and we got talking. And then he told me how amazing and lucky I was to be in department of Electrical Engineering. Then he asked me about my interests and what do I plan on doing for my Final Year Project. Now if I would have straight away told him I wanted to do my Final Year Project in Robotics. He would have told me it has no scope in Pakistan and it is totally useless. Instead, I told him that my interest was more towards electronics and programming. And then he told me that in few years Electronics Engineer would be on roads and have no future and I was making a big mistake. I felt like banging my head. I told him that I meant robotics and automation, and then he again told me it has no scope in Pakistan. I told him, I do not plan on staying in Pakistan and would go wherever I have to for pursuing my interest.
Now his tone started to change, and he started explaining me the advantages of pursuing career in 'Electrical Engineering', meanwhile he kept on talking about 'Electrical Power Engineering' and another senior engineer told me that those other type of things I am interested in is not even real engineering. It was then when I realized it was pointless arguing and I kept on nodding for 5 more minutes and moved on.
When I was applying to NED, I do not remember applying to 'Electrical Power Engineering' and in fact I chose 'Electrical Engineering'. And we have been taught about circuits, computer architecture, programming, power and so on. However, certain teachers and student claims that only courses related to power are useful. And also when few people I met at my internships and here and there when see me working on Raspberry Pi's and Arduino's, they are kind of surprised that I am not in Electronics and rather in Electrical Engineer.
"Electrical engineering is one of the newer branches of engineering, and dates back to the late 19th century. It is the branch of engineering that deals with the technology of electricity. Electrical engineers work on a wide range of components, devices and systems, from tiny microchips to huge power station generators."
This is what Google tells you when you ask what is EEE. Moreover, if you'd log go to MIT, number one engineering university in the world, EECS department website it has 4 majors. Electrical Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Computer Science and Engineering, and Computer Science and Molecular Biology. And absolutely none of them claims to make you a power engineer.
In a nutshell there are few differences in courses of Electrical and Electronics engineering courses, however, the border is quite blurry and you can in future specialize in any area you would like.
Electrical Engineering courses are quite general and therefore I believe that I have an option of specializing wherever I may enjoy the most, for now its definitely Robotics.
